How we calculate it: one batch of Vanillekipferl

One batch of Vanillekipferl makes 676 g of dough and costs €2.83 in ingredients at Billa. We use the Dr. Oetker Vanillekipferl recipe: 280 g flour, 210 g butter, 100 g ground almonds, 70 g icing sugar and 2 sachets of vanilla sugar. Add 50 g icing sugar and 1 sachet of vanilla sugar for dusting. The recipe says it makes 70 to 80 Kipferl.

Homemade Vanillekipferl: a kilo costs €4.18 in ingredients

The formula: grams in the recipe × pack price ÷ pack size, for each ingredient, then add them up. We only count what you use, including the sugar for dusting. Electricity for the oven is not included.

Per kilo of dough that is €4.18 at Billa and €4.61 at Spar. Baking evaporates water from the butter, at most 16% of its weight. Even then, the finished kilo stays under €4.50 at Billa and under €5 at Spar.
