Discounter prices, with fine print

Published October 5, 2026 · mitbringen · Savings & Prices

Since 24 September 2026, Billa has sold up to 3,000 items permanently at the leading discounters’ regular price. You spot them by the yellow arrow reading “Immer Clever Preis” on the shelf. What it doesn’t mean: Billa does not match Hofer’s or Lidl’s promotions, and the 25% coupon doesn’t work on these items.

What is Billa’s Immer Clever Preis?

The Immer Clever Preis (“always clever price”) is a permanent price with no end date: Billa and Billa Plus sell up to 3,000 products at the leading discounters’ price.

Shelf price tag with a yellow arrow in a supermarket, sugar packs and apple juice in front; no logo, no readable brand.
  • Start: Thursday, 24 September 2026, at Billa and Billa Plus.
  • Range: up to 3,000 items. A Billa store carries about 8,000 products, a Billa Plus about 18,000.
  • Mix: about 40% brands, about 30% clever, about 30% other Billa own brands such as Ja! Natürlich or Billa Immer Gut.
  • No jö needed: the price applies without a jö loyalty membership.
  • Checks: Billa says it compares the prices every week and adjusts them.

Billa’s announcement doesn’t name any discounter. How many of the items a store carries depends on its size.

Billa’s examples, checked on the shelf

All four price examples Billa gave before launch match the Billa online shop on 5 October 2026.

Item Billa example (Sept 2026) Billa online shop, 5 Oct 2026 Unit price
Wiener Zucker Feinkristall sugar, 1 kg €1.59 €1.59 €1.59/kg
blend-a-med toothpaste, 125 ml €1.75 €1.75 €14.00/l
Ja! Natürlich apple juice, 1 l €1.79 €1.79 €1.79/l
clever toast ham, 200 g €2.49 €2.49 €12.45/kg

As of week 41/2026. Examples as stated by Billa (5min.at, oe24.at); shelf price from the Billa online shop, retrieved by mitbringen on 5 Oct 2026.

There’s no discounter column on purpose. We don’t have same-week shelf prices for Hofer and Lidl that we can put side by side cleanly – and an estimated number would be worse than none.

What the yellow arrow doesn’t cover

The Immer Clever Preis follows the discounters’ regular price, not their promotions. According to retailreport.at, time-limited discounter promotions are not part of the comparison.

An example from the first week: according to oe24, Hofer sold minced pork (1 kg) for €2.99 instead of €6.49 and bananas for €0.95/kg instead of €1.59/kg from 28 Sep to 1 Oct 2026. The yellow arrow doesn’t get you those prices.

  • No 25% coupon: Immer Clever Preis items are excluded from Billa’s coupon. How the coupon works now is in Billa discount stickers.
  • No arrow, no discounter price: everything else on the shelf keeps Billa’s normal price.
  • Billa promotions continue: Billa’s regular promotions still run alongside it.

Is Billa now as cheap as Hofer?

On the marked items Billa aims to hit the leading discounters’ regular price, but that doesn’t make the whole shop discounter-level. A Billa store carries about 8,000 products; the yellow arrow is on at most 3,000 of them.

According to the AK price monitor, discounters were on average 10.1% cheaper than supermarkets in March 2026 (what the AK price monitor shows). Only a new survey will show whether Billa closes that gap.

Nor is the rush proof of price: according to Heute, Billa reported more than six million shopping trips from 24 to 29 September. That’s a sales figure, not a saving. Which chain is cheapest for your list is in the Hofer, Lidl, Spar and Billa comparison.

Same price, different pack: compare per kilo

A permanent price says nothing about pack size: in the Billa online shop, clever toast ham costs €2.49 both as 200 g and as the 300 g XXL pack – €12.45 against €8.30 per kilo.

Brand versus own brand still matters too: Wiener Zucker Feinkristall costs €1.59 per kilo at Billa, clever Feinkristallzucker €0.89 (as of week 41/2026). The yellow arrow doesn’t mean it’s the cheapest product on the shelf.

How mitbringen helps

mitbringen lays this week’s flyer deals from Hofer, Lidl, Spar and Billa over your shopping list – exactly the promotions the yellow arrow doesn’t cover.

A phone showing a shopping list with highlighted weekly deals lies next to a shopping basket on a kitchen table.

The limit: mitbringen doesn’t flag Immer Clever Preis items and shows no yellow arrow. Whether an item is marked at Billa, you see on the price tag in store.

Frequently asked questions

What is Billa's Immer Clever Preis?

The Immer Clever Preis (“always clever price”) is a permanent price at Billa and Billa Plus. Since 24 September 2026, Billa has sold up to 3,000 items at the leading discounters’ regular price, with no end date. Billa says it checks and adjusts the prices every week.

How do I spot Immer Clever Preis items?

By the yellow arrow reading “Immer Clever Preis” on the shelf price tag in store. The price applies without a jö loyalty membership. How many marked items a store carries depends on its size.

Does Billa also match Hofer’s and Lidl’s promotions?

No. Billa benchmarks the leading discounters’ regular price; time-limited discounter promotions are not part of the comparison. A promotional price at Hofer or Lidl can therefore be below the Immer Clever Preis.

Does the 25% coupon apply to yellow-arrow items?

No. Immer Clever Preis items are excluded from the 25% coupon. If the most expensive product in your shop carries the arrow, the checkout takes the discount off a different eligible item instead.
